Warm knits, hats and scarves, blankets and socks. Knitted bits and pieces made with gentle energy, worn with pride.
My dear friend Colleen Mpokou, Owner/Operator of Bud to Bloom Daycare in Burnaby, is one of the most talented woman I know.
Colleen dedicates her life to raising little buds in her childcare establishment, from morning to late evening.
After that she takes care of her own family.
When most people are ready to relax and chill with some me-time, that is when Colleen knits.
Her pieces are made from her love of beautiful things, she gets energy and strength from giving back. Colleen is one of those people that gives more than she could ever receive.
Cast On of a new piece starts, her ideas flow, and the Alternate rhythms to work every row brings her calm.
She can never stop at Make 1, no, row after row she works her fingers to create these lovely works of art.
She will Decrease, Increase and Garter Stitch until it is perfect.
I have three sets made by Colleen and I have to say they keep me warm in every cold snap, every rainy day, and even on a cold summer’s night.
These classy sets flow with every outfit – and my hair is never out of place when I remove the hat.
I plan on buying these for everyone I know.
Like anything else in life we have the power to share good feelings, love, and community spirit.
Once we accept the fact that we are the community then going local is the most logical decision.
To wear something made by the very hands of someone I know and admire is a great feeling.
Colleen pays careful attention to details. She spends hours creating pieces of huggable art in the most fluid designs.
Doing my part to support local businesswomen is the ethical, moral, and neighbourly thing to do. We do live in a time when every single community act we make will bring about real and good change for families working hard to build a future for their children.
If you believe in buying local then go ahead and find your neighbour’s products, look around and you will encounter many local women and men building and creating with their very own hands. The price is reasonable, the feeling is incredible, the pieces will last a lifetime. There is nothing disposable about our local artists’ work.
Loving local as always.
